New Mayor is the chance for new style of London government

Commenting on Boris Johnson's victory in the London Mayoral elections, Councillor Merrick Cockell, Chairman of London Councils, said:

"Throughout his campaign Boris Johnson has argued that London's mayor will achieve most when he works in partnership with the boroughs. Londoners have endorsed his approach and London Councils is ready with practical ideas to support his ambition.

"From increasing affordable housing to tackling crime, Londoners' common aspirations need different approaches in different communities. People want to know that the decisions affecting their local community are taken in the open, and by people that understand their community. Most importantly, they want solutions tailored to their community.

"London boroughs have a record of meeting these demands. Now we can go further. London's councils are the best performing in England. We have the talent to turn that opportunity into results.

"I will soon be meeting with the Mayor to discuss practical ways of developing his more inclusive approach. I am confident that in the coming weeks we can lay the foundations for a partnership that will deliver more for Londoners."
