Boroughs - not quangos - are best placed to improve education in London

Business, education and local authority leaders will meet today to shape the future of learning in London to ensure all the capital's young people are equipped with the skills they need for the modern workplace.

The event will demonstrate how London's local authorities are best-placed to deliver on the government's proposed education reforms, including the new diplomas which will combine practical skills, work placements and classroom learning.

On behalf of the boroughs, London Councils has already begun developing the systems needed to support boroughs working together to ensure the smooth transition to the new regime.

This is despite the government backtracking on its original commitment to devolve funding for sixth forms and colleges from the Learning and Skills Council to local authorities (which already have responsibility for funding education for under-16s).
