Councils need freedom to deliver the homes communities need
Responding to the launch of the Local Government Association's vision for the transformation of the Housing Revenue Account subsidy system, London Councils' Executive Member for Housing, Councillor Jamie Carswell said:
"We now have the opportunity to expand this debate beyond a small group of housing finance experts and government officials and make a real difference to the lives of council tenants.
"Many of the challenges faced by local authority landlords are exacerbated by the HRA subsidy system - and particularly in London, where council resources are under immense pressure. As London Councils made clear in our housing vision, this means that our efforts to improve the quality of life enjoyed by our tenants will always be hampered.
"It is essential that local authorities are given the freedom to deliver the housing our communities desperately need: working with the HRA in its current form is like boxing with one hand tied behind your back."
