Communities are at the heart of decision-making in London
Commenting on the launch of the 'Communities in control: Real people, real power' White Paper, Chairman of London Councils, Councillor Merrick Cockell, said:
"Councils across London are committed to giving residents and businesses a bigger role in shaping decisions that affect their communities. This principle is at the heart of the approach being championed in London and I am delighted it has been recognised by the government in its white paper.
"Many of the proposals have already been introduced by London as innovative ways of encouraging local people to be part of the democratic process and we now look forward to seeing some of these excellent local examples being rolled out across the country."
Among the schemes already introduced across the capital to widen participation include resident forums in Southwark, a dedicated website for young people in Waltham Forest, a youth council in Lewisham and community assembly meetings in Hillingdon.
