London Councils funding boosts cycling and walking schemes in the capital

Schemes to encourage Londoners to use greener forms of transport including cycling and walking received a £1.2 million funding boost from London Councils today (Wednesday).

Living Streets is set to receive the bulk of the funding; £547,904 over four years, to work with schools, businesses, local authorities, and community groups to raise awareness of the benefits of walking and encourage more people to take it up.

Another initiative set to receive funding; the London Cycling Campaign will receive £479,780 to increase the number of people taking up cycling. It will develop a number of social cycle rides to encourage people to use a bicycle, and work with local authorities across the capital to develop projects to encourage more children to take up cycling.

The Creative Environment Networks will receive the remaining £194,316 of the fund to work with schools and small and medium businesses to develop schemes to encourage people to take up cycling or walking. This project aims to cut 237,000 of the journeys currently taken by people using cars.
