Government must reduce accountability gap between police and people, says London Councils
London Councils is calling on government to be bold and move quickly to reduce the accountability gap between the police and the communities they serve, with the proposals laid out in the Flanagan Review published today.
The opportunity to do this is in a Home Office Green Paper on policing, expected later this year.
London Councils would like to see the government explore more innovative models of policing in this Paper. These include allowing elected councillors to play a direct role in appointing borough commanders; enabling closer police working with local partnerships; and creating seamless working between borough commanders and senior council officers to deliver the local communities' priorities.
