Local government is essential in shaping the future of the capital – London Councils Chairman

Speaking at last night's annual London Government Dinner at Mansion House, London Councils' Chairman Councillor Merrick Cockell has portrayed London's local government as being 'essential in shaping the future of the capital'.

In his speech Councillor Cockell reflected on the strength of London's local government, but warned that the government's 'terrible financial settlement for London has made our task much harder'.

He also highlighted the importance of collaborative working - and called on the Mayor of London to seek further common ground with councils to work in Londoners' interests.

The London Government Dinner is an annual event organised by the City of London Opens in a new window. Councillor Cockell is the first London local government leader to be invited to speak alongside the Lord Mayor and the Mayor of London at the dinner.
