Mayor of London must use new powers to support the capital’s boroughs

Following the announcement that the Greater London Authority (GLA) Bill has received Royal Assent, London Councils has called on the Mayor to use his new powers to support the boroughs' efforts to improve the lives of Londoners.

The organisation has also renewed its invitation to the Mayor to chair and co-fund the government's proposed London Waste and Recycling Board.

London Councils fears that the Mayor's decision to go back on his promise to take part in the Board will disrupt waste management in the capital and will mean planned new recycling facilities could be delayed or lost.

On the Mayor's decision not to engage with the new Waste and Recycling Board, London Councils Chairman Councillor Merrick Cockell said:

"London desperately needs a co-ordinated effort to manage the capital's waste, and the proposed Board would deliver this. But the Mayor's decision to work alone will make tackling the twin challenges of increasing recycling and reducing waste sent to landfill even harder. London could seriously lose out as a result of the Mayor's refusal to work with us. We urge him to change his mind and work with us to improve London's environment."

Commenting on the Mayor's new powers on housing and planning contained in the new GLA Act, Councillor Cockell said:

"It is vital that the Mayor does not abuse his new powers or seek to micro-manage those boroughs on planning issues that he disagrees with. The boroughs know what works for their local communities and have a democratic mandate from them; he must not dismiss them because their views are not in line with his one-size fits all approach.  Londoners live in the best city in the world, and they expect their leaders to work together to ensure that this remains the case."
