Bike to work scheme

London Councils seeks to break down the barriers to cycling and walkingReleased on 02 December 2008

Secure cycle parks and the creation of an 'Active Travel Strategy' for London are just two ways to encourage more Londoners to take up a healthier and greener way of travelling across the capital, says London Councils.

London Councils has drawn up a package of ways boroughs, Transport for London (TfL) and other organisations can work together to break down the barriers preventing Londoners taking up walking and cycling.

These proposals, produced in conjunction with Living Streets, London Cycling Campaign and Walk London form part of the vision that the organisations want the Mayor to take forward in his next transport strategy.

Cycling and walking are already popular methods of travelling in the capital. Cycling use in London has increased by 91 per cent since 2000 and walking is second only to driving as the most common way for people to travel across London, accounting for 31 per cent of all weekday trips.
