ALG welcomes Mayor's recognition of boroughs key role in delivering London planReleased on 18 September 2002
The Association of London Government (ALG) has welcomed
indications from the Mayor of London that he has listened to some
of its concerns on his Draft London Plan.
The move came as a cross-party delegation from the ALG outlined
their views on the plan to the Greater London Assembly Planning and
Spatial Development Committee yesterday (September 17).
Among these issues were that it was too focused on central London,
failed to bring out the importance of outer London and sought to
take powers away from boroughs on negotiating planning
'gains' through Section 106 agreements on new
developments.
Chair of the ALG Transport and Environment Committee Cllr Phil
Portwood said: "The meeting was very productive and I am
delighted that the Mayor appears to have listened to some of the
ALG's concerns especially on the development of outer London
and on the Section 106 agreements.
"The plan is a step in the right direction. It must ensure it
clearly shows how the services, support and infrastructure London
and its growing population will need to cope with the extra demands
it will face in years to come will be developed.
"While we still have a number of concerns about the plan, I am
pleased that the Mayor is willing to listen and work with us to
ensure the London Plan delivers what it sets out to do - provide a
prosperous and attractive capital city meeting the needs of all
Londoners."
Ends.
The Association of London Government is committed to fighting for
more resources for London and getting the best possible deal for
London's 33 councils. Part think-tank, part lobbying
organisation and part service provider, the ALG formulates
policies, organises campaigns and runs a range of services all
designed to make life better for Londoners.
The ALG has agreed with the Mayor an extension for its views on the
London Plan, and will no submit its official response to the
consultation in mid October.
The cross party delegation from the ALG were Cllr Portwood (Ealing
- Labour); Cllr Charles Walker (Wandsworth - Conservative); Cllr
Bridget Fox (Islington - Liberal Democrat); Archie Galloway
(Corporation of London)
