Metropolitan Police Authority
The MPA is an independent statutory body that scrutinises and supports the work of the Metropolitan Police. Before it was created as part of the GLA in 2000, the Met was accountable only to the Home Secretary.
Its main roles are to set targets and monitor performance, publish an annual policing plan, oversee the appointment and discipline of senior police officers, oversee formal inquiries and the implementation of their recommendations, and to increase community confidence and trust in London’s police.
The MPA is made up of 23 members, 12 of whom are members of the London Assembly. There are seven independent members (six selected through open advertisement and one appointed by the Home Secretary), and four magistrates. There is no borough representation, although the MPA is a (non-voting) member of London Councils.
