* There was no overall control in 1998 as there was no coalition or administration at all from 1996 to 2000 in Hackney. The council had no leader or committee chairs until 2000-2001 when Labour and Conservative formed an adminstration.
Hackney Mayor elections
In May 2002, Hackney residents took part in a referendum for a directly elected mayor. That came out decisively in favour, with nearly 59% saying yes.
The first election took place in October 2002.
