Lobbying

Campaigns

London Councils often runs dedicated campaigns to help achieve the outcomes our member authorities want. These might involve promotional work to raise public awareness of specific issues, lobbying work with MPs, and organising events. Some campaigns we run ourselves, while others we run jointly with partner organisations.

Our current campaigns include:

  • Be a councillor: this is about making Londoners more aware of the work councils, and councillors, do with the aim of encouraging more people to stand in the next London borough elections in May 2010
  • Ban the bag: we are encouraging people to write to their MPs in support of our private bill banning the use of plastic and other throw-away shopping bags in London
  • Trusting devolution: we want the government to devolve more power to the boroughs, in the interests of better democracy. Our message is that local people are best-placed to take local decisions.

Other recent campaigns:

  • Fairer funding for councils: our campaign to persuade the government to improve the grant distribution formulae used to determine how much money councils will get over the next three years
  • Smarter funding for schools: how we lobbied for education resources to be targeted properly
