Renewing

All old-style Freedom Passes ceased to work on ticket gates and as a swipe-card on 31 March and can no longer be used as a visual 'flash' pass. If you've not renewed yet, please do so as soon as possible as you will not be able to travel free until you do so.

How to renew

You can either fill out and download the application form here which you can then take to any London Post Office branch, or pick up a printed version from the local Post Office*. Take your completed form to the Post Office along with documents to prove your identity and address as well as your passport style photograph. Find out what documents are acceptable and more about the photo requirements.

Holders of disabled persons passes must get a letter of authority from their borough before going to the Post Office to apply.

* If you live in Barking and Dagenham, Camden and Sutton boroughs:

Barking and Dagenham, Camden and Sutton councils do not issue their Freedom Passes at Post Offices. If you are an eligible disabled or older person in one of these boroughs you must apply to your local council. For further information contact:

How is the new pass different?

The new pass is different from the old in a number of ways:

  • new style passes are valid for five years and can be used as soon as received
  • for additional security, new passes include a photograph of you on the card itself rather than on a separate photocard, so you will need to produce a passport-style photograph of yourself before you apply. More about the photo
  • new passes usually take 10 working days to arrive and are sent to you in the post. If you don't receive your pass within 10 working days be assured that it is on its way.
