Green Directions

Green directions for London

Summary

A London Councils and London Environment Directors' Network conference

"With climate change we can’t just close our eyes and cross our fingers.
We need to step up our action to tackle it… and time isn’t on our side.”

(Rt Hon David Miliband MP)

London is a unique world city, with a buoyant economy and a growing population but, like every other city, London risks catastrophic consequences if climate change is allowed to continue unchecked. It is estimated that London accounts for 8 per cent of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions or 11 per cent when aviation is included.

Issues such as climate change, energy policy, waste and resource management, and transport have never been higher on the public and political agenda. In response to such challenges this major one-day conference brought together experts and opinion-formers to discuss the challenges and opportunities for London and the key role that local government must play.

Delegates included elected members and chief officers of London boroughs and senior officers from public, commercial and voluntary sector organisations.
