Olympic and Paralympic Handover Celebrations
2008 is an exciting year for London and the UK.
On Sunday 24 August, when the Mayor of Beijing hands hand the Olympic Flag to the Mayor of London as part of the Beijing Olympic Games Closing Ceremony, London officially become the next host city of the Olympic Games.
And on Wednesday 17 September, during the Closing Ceremony of the Paralympic Games, the baton will again be passed to London.
Both the Olympic and Paralympic Handovers will take place at around 2.30 pm, and celebratory events are planned for across the UK.
Local Events
In addition, many London boroughs are planning high profile local events to mark these two historic moments.
From a full-costume 1948 street party in Hackney, to an Olympic-themed float at Carnival's Children's Day parade in Kensington and Chelsea, a flag raising event on the Jubilant on the Thames in Richmond, the creation of a 'Olympic Garden' of flags made by local residents in Lewisham to Young Olympic Ambassadors raising the flag at Havering Town Show - boroughs are ensuing that their communities can get involved and that it really is 'Everyone's 2012'.
