Salaries and Expenses at London Councils

London Councils is a cross-party organisation, funded and run by our member authorities to work on behalf of them all, regardless of political persuasion. Our purpose is to help London local government successfully shape both London as a world class capital city and the individual communities and localities that make it up. We are committed to helping ensure that London local government has the freedom, resource, power and capacity to make life better for Londoners.

To fulfil our purpose, we:

  • promote London boroughs' role in leading local communities and services and argue for them to have the tools necessary for them to do that job effectively on behalf of the people they serve;
  • provide a range of direct services to Londoners on behalf of boroughs collectively;
  • act as a hub for sharing practice, people, knowledge, information and services between boroughs in order to help improve performance and efficiency overall. We host London’s Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership-Capital Ambition. We also act as the Employers’ Organisation for the 32 London boroughs, providing advice, support and training and representing them in negotiations.

Our members - all 32 London boroughs, the City of London, the Metropolitan Police Authority and the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority – fund our work through subscription.

The main policy decisions are taken by our Leaders' Committee, which meets nine times a year and brings together the leaders of all member authorities.

We have a total staff of around 120 (full time equivalents) people, most of whom work at our main offices at 59½ Southwark Street, close to London Bridge. The Parking and Traffic and Congestion Charge Appeals Service is run from Angel Square in Angel, Islington.
