Trusting devolution: the challenge for London

As Londoners prepare to go to the polls on 1 May, London Councils has published a prospectus that both examines some of the key challenges facing the capital in 2008 and proposes a better way of dealing with them.

In place of top-down 'centralist' solutions, Trusting devolution: the challenge for London makes the case for a more localist approach to taking on some of the key challenges facing London. It recognises that the relationship between the individual and their democratic representatives at the level closest to the daily lives of Londoners - the capital's borough councils - is critical to dealing with these issues effectively.

Our prospectus begins a dialogue between London Councils and all those running for office in London on 1 May, as well as with government and other key stakeholders. We want to hear your response to the possibilities of greater devolution and the resurgence of ambitious local government in London.

After the elections we will be arranging a series of events to look at how, with partners, we can deal with these challenges. We are keen to hear your views on the ideas contained in this prospectus and would encourage you to email your comments to opinion@londoncouncils.gov.uk
